In the latest episode of the Unschool Pages of Our Lives Podcast, titled “Mardi Gras and Carnival, Examined by Unschoolers,” we embarked on a vibrant journey through the heart of American Carnivals, exploring its rich tapestry of traditions, rebellion, and cultural significance for people of color. From the lively streets of Louisiana’s Mardi Gras to the rhythmic beats of Trinidad and Tobago’s Carnival, we delved into the myriad ways this fete transcends borders, each culture adding its unique flavor to the festivities.

The Essence of Carnival

Carnival is more than just a party aka a fete; it’s an act of rebellion. It’s a time when social norms are flipped on their head, where satire dances in the streets, and the spirit of defiance rings loud for weeks and weeks. This festival has roots in the struggle against oppression, a history of communities asserting their identity in the face of colonialism and slavery. A system that made showing up in your traditional regalia or even at all could lead to kidnapping and imprisonment.

In Louisiana, the tradition of the Mardi Gras Indians stands out as a vibrant testament to the cultural and Indigenous American heritages that shape the city’s soul. These magnificent parades are not just displays of creativity but acts of reclamation and resistance, where communities come together to celebrate their heritage and resilience.

Carnival Celebrates Our Humanity

Carnival reminds us of the power of joy and the strength found in the ancestors who endured. It’s a time to embrace our humanity, to celebrate our bodies, our stories, and our connections to each other. From the intricate beadwork of the Mardi Gras Indians to the electrifying performances of steel pan bands, every aspect of Carnival is a testament to the creativity and strength of the human spirit.

A Journey Through Celebration

Our podcast episode took us on a journey through the different areas in the Americas where Carnival is celebrated, highlighting the unique traditions and the universal themes of joy, resistance, and community solidarity. We discussed the significance of the baby in the king cake, a tradition shrouded in mystery and varying interpretations, explored the body painting and powder throwing culture of Trinidad Carnival, and throwing of gifts tossed to the crowd as tokens of gratitude and celebration.

The Future of Carnival Traditions

As we navigate Redacted History Month and look to the future, we see Carnival as a living, evolving tradition that continues to reflect the struggles, gratitude, and resilience of the communities that celebrate it. It’s a powerful reminder of our shared humanity and the unbreakable spirit of Indigenous People of Color that can overcome adversity.
